CATTID - Université de ROME "SAPIENZA"
CATTID is a cross-faculty research centre of the Sapienza University. Founded in 1979, the centre has been subsequently involved in research programmes aimed at the creation of multimedia prototypes and at offering professors and students of the university the opportunity to experience the news learning methodologies.
A wide array of academic competences coming from various scientific environments are currently committed to three major research areas: learning methodologies, human-computer interaction and RFID/Wireless networks hosted respectively by
  1. LABeL – the E-Learning Laboratory aims at an educational approach to the e-learning paradigm. Research topics include immersive education, mobile learning and digital game-based learning as well as the impact of virtual environments and cooperation processes on the efficiency of education. It analyses and uses specific management systems for learning and educational contents (educational platforms, Learning Management System, Content Management System) in order to design and provide blended learning courses. Outbound activities are mainly focused on consultancy for the process of migration to distance learning, support to the initial setup and quality analysis.

  2. LUA – the Usability and Accessibility Laboratory promotes Human-Computer Interaction studies, focusing on usability and accessibility issues of software and digital contents on several devices: web, mobile, digital TV, a.s.o. . LUA also investigates the use of innovative Control Interfaces for common and impaired users. The laboratory provides tools and consultancy for external companies for usability and accessibility assessment processes. LUA also participates in the design and development of accessible application for the partners. Mobile Wireless Accessibility (MWA), an IBM application partially developed at CATTID, could be taken as an example.

  3. RFID-Lab – the laboratory, coordinated by Prof. Carlo Maria Medaglia, is sponsored by several companies (more than 80 at the moment), among them: Oracle, Intel, IBM, Siemens, CISCO, Nokia, Motorola, SUN and Microsoft. The RFID-Lab fosters theoretical and practical research on autoID (RFID, NFC, 1D and 2D codes), Low Rate Wireless Personal Area Networks (LR-WPAN) and Real Time Location Systems (RTLS) technologies as well as studies on possible architectures and security of the Internet of Things. New approaches to the issues of tracing and are tracking also underway through the intense use of models and integration with other technologies and systems. Also, completely new uses of RFID have been investigated, such as the integration in assistive systems for people with impairments or the use in electronic seals for international container traffic control and management.
The RFID Lab is actually involved in the FP6 Stolpan project and CIP RaceNetwork RFID project. RFID-Lab also acts as centre of Excellence for several Italian institutions such as the Centre for Informatics in the Public Administration (CNIPA) ,the Department of Innovation (DIT), the Ministry of Telecommunication and the Ministry of Health.

The CNRFID (Centre National de Référence RFID) has been created to promote the development of applications for this new technology in "facilitating" appropriation by the users of radio frequency identification and tracking technologies (RFID) as well as techniques, best practices and systems that use them. The Center will focus on applications of tracking and identifying objects and animals by radio-frequency.

INRIA, the French national institute for research in computer science and control, operating under the dual authority of the Ministry of Research and the Ministry of Industry, is dedicated to fundamental and applied research in information and communication science and technology (ICST). The Institute also plays a major role in technology transfer by fostering training through research, diffusion of scientific and technical information, development, as well as providing expert advice and participating in international programs.
By playing a leading role in the scientific community in the field and being in close contact with industry, INRIA is a major participant in the development of ICST in France. Throughout its eight research centres in Rocquencourt, Rennes, Sophia Antipolis, Grenoble, Nancy, Bordeaux, Lille and Saclay, INRIA has a workforce of 3 800, 2 800 of whom are scientists from INRIA and INRIA's partner organizations such as CNRS (the French National Center for Scientific Research), universities and leading engineering schools. They work in 150 joint research project-teams. Many INRIA researchers are also professors and approximately 1 000 doctoral students work on theses as part of INRIA research project-teams.
INRIA develops many partnerships with industry and fosters technology transfer and company foundation in the field of ICST - some ninety companies have been founded with the support of INRIA-Transfert, a subsidiary of INRIA, specialized in guiding, evaluating, qualifying, and financing innovative high-tech IT start-up companies. INRIA is involved in standardization committees such as the IETF, ISO and the W3C of which INRIA was the European host from 1995 to 2002.INRIA maintains important international relations and exchanges. In Europe, INRIA is a member of ERCIM which brings together research institutes from 19 European countries. INRIA is a partner in about 120 FP6 actions and 40 FP7 actions, mainly in the ICST field. INRIA also collaborates with numerous scientific and academic institutions abroad (joint laboratories such as LIAMA, associated research teams, training and internship programs).

Instituto Tecnológico de Informática (ITI) - Universitat Politècnica de València
The Institute of Computer Technology is the specialized technological centre of research, development, and innovation in software technologies. Created in 1994 as an initiative of the Polytechnic University of Valencia (UPV), the Institute of Small and Medium Enterprises of Valencia (IMPIVA), and a group of companies in the informatics sector, ITI is classified as a non-profit organization. Not only is it listed at number 55 in the Registration Centre for Innovation and Technology (CIT), it also belongs to the Network of Technological Institutes of Valencia (REDIT), the Spanish Federation of Organizations for Innovation and Technology (FEDIT), as well as numerous other organizations and associations. All demonstrating that ITI has signed agreements and partnerships with national and international agencies.

ITI is developing research, development, innovation, and technology transfer.  Offering companies the ability to incorporate technologies and capabilities developed in I+D+I with their products, processes, or business. The technologies and services offered are the result of a combination of cutting-edge scientific knowledge and a long experience in partnerships with other companies.

Katholieke Universiteit Leuven (KUL)
K.U.Leuven is the largest Belgian academic institution and one of the oldest European universities. The Interdisciplinary Centre for Law and Information Technology (ICRI) is a K.U.Leuven research centre with activities focused on legal aspects of information technology and electronic communications and on legal information retrieval and legal knowledge systems. The principal areas of legal research concern electronic signatures and PKI, electronic archiving, e-government, electronic commerce, Internet content control, personal data protection and identity management, ICT contracts and -conflicts, ICT-related intellectual property rights and electronic communications.

Royal Holloway University of London (RHUL)
Queen Victoria presided over the grand opening ceremony of Royal Holloway College on 30 June 1886 and since then the College has continued to grow in size and status to become one of the top research-led university institutions in the country, hosting in excess of 8,500 students from over 100 countries. Royal Holloway is acknowledged for research excellence in science, the arts and humanities and attracts leading academics and research students from throughout the world and collaborates on research projects with other international universities, industry, charities and public agencies.

The Information Security Group (ISG at Royal Holloway is an interdisciplinary research group comprised of computer scientists and mathematicians. The group offers an active research environment with seventeen established academic posts, five Research Assistants and a large number of research students, making it one of the largest academic security groups in the world. The group regularly hosts international visitors, has strong research links with a number of industrial and government institutions and in 1998 was awarded a Queen's Anniversary Prize in recognition of its work. The ISG Smart Card centre (SCC was founded in 2002 with support from industry. The primary objective was to create a World-Wide centre of excellence for training and research, which today covers Smart Cards, RFIDs, tagging, NFC, mobile communications, passports, IDs, e-tickets, applications and related security systems and technologies.

Almost 200 years of research and teaching in society's service make Graz University of Technology one of Austria's most venerable scientific institutions. The University's success throughout its eventful history has been based upon the achievements of outstanding personalities in science, research and their application. Richard Zsigmondy, who received the Nobel Prize for Chemistry in 1926, worked as an assistant and an outside lecturer at Graz University of Technology. Names such as Herbert Eichholzer, Hans List, Otto Nußbaumer, Friedrich Mohs, Anna-Lülja Praun, Friedrich Schmiedl, Nikola Tesla or Ferdinand Wittenbauer account for the excellent reputation of Graz University of Technology in the past and present.

Université de Malaga (UMA)
The University of Málaga has about 40.000 students and the main technical degrees at the undergraduate and graduate levels that it grants are those in Industrial/Mechanical Engineering, Telecommunications Engineering and Computer Science. The research group that is involved in SERENITY is the Software Engineering Group (GISUM) that is part of the Computer Science Department in the university. The main activities of GISUM are related to Software Engineering applied to Distributed Systems. One of the most active lines in the group is "Security in Distributed Systems and Applications". More precisely, the members of the security section are involved in research concerning different aspects of Internet security, with special interest in Security engineering, Electronic Notarization, Smartcards Applications, Analysis and development of electronic commerce protocols, Software Protection, Digital Rights Management, Access Control and Authorization and Digital Certification, among others.
